My KG students loved making their very own whale plates after learning about the story of Prophet Yunus (as). After reading the story of Prophet Yunus (as) and watching the nasheed from Zaky and Friends, we began working on this activity. It was amazing and the students had so much fun. After their plates were completed they used them to retell the story :-) I prepped their plates beforehand by drawing a triangle on the back of the plate for them to cut to form the mouth and tail. Then the students began by first painting their plates on the front side (day 1). The next day after they were dry, they cut out their triangle. This created the mouth of the whale and also made the tail. They glued on their dua and taped to the back their praying man (attached to a ribbon). Enjoy! FREE download here.

Each year after learning about the seerah of the Prophet Muhammed sallahu alayhi wa salam, I like to do a fun project with my 2nd graders. I change it every year. This year I decided to put them into groups and take all the events we learned about and put them into a timeline of the life of the Prophet Muhammed sallahu alayhi wa salam. The students first had to divide the jobs in the group (researcher, manager, writer, drawer, colorer, etc.). Then they began working on their rough drafts. They had to write a brief description of the event and a picture to go along with it. After they completed their rough draft they had to conference with me for editing. I mentioned this fold at the ISNA West Coast Educational Forum this past January as being my favorite vocabulary fold. Since it still is ;-) I decided to share it. I love it for three simple reasons, it's so easy for the students to fold and remember how to fold, it can be folded up and glued in their journal, and it can focus on all the details related to one vocabulary term. At the beginning of the year I taught my third graders how to make it. I demonstrated it the first three times we used it naming it 'The Vocab Fold'. Then throughout the year I would tell them to make 'The Vocab Fold' and they would know what I meant. This eliminated having to demonstrate a new fold every time.
How it's used? Every unit has those few key terms that are so important to understanding the entire unit. As you can see in the picture above I place the key term in the center diamond (which will be created with the fold). Then in each of the four squares around the diamond important information is filled in centered around ONLY that term. Maybe you are teaching the story of Prophet Yunus AS. His name could be that key term placed in the center and in the four squares important events, details, a picture, or lessons learned can be in the four squares. It can be used in Arabic or Quran too. Put a word or letter in the center and come up with details for the students to fill in around the word or letter. How to make it? It's so easy! Take a sheet of any type of paper. Fold it down the middle (hamburger or hotdog). Then with your paper still folded, fold it down the middle the opposite direction. You should end up with a square that when you open it you have four squares. Now with it still folded into the square you have four corners of that square. Find the corner where the center fold is (the side that cannot be opened or the center of the page). At this corner fold it over facing the center of the square to create a small triangle (this creates the diamond in the center). Now open it all up and you should end up with a diamond in the center and four squares all around it. (stay tuned for a video demonstration). On the board I draw the paper and place things I want the students to fill in (I use it as an assessment). To store it students fold it back up into a square add glue to one side and glue it in their journals. When they need it they just open it up and have all the information needed. It can also be used for note taking. Enjoy!
The Kindergarteners were learning the story of Prophet Sulaiman and the story of the ants. After I read the story to the students "The Ants Panic" by S. Khan, we began working on this multistep project. The students loved this project I got the original idea from Pinterest and put a twist on it to go with the story. First the students completed the sentence started and then colored their background. We took brown construction paper and using our shapes we learned in Math class they drew 1 small triangle, 1 large triangle, and an oval. Then the students glued the prices to form their ant and drew the face and legs. After that the students colored and glued the shoe above the ant and there you have it. A few weeks ago we have started our unit on the seerah of the Prophet Muhammed (sa) in 3rd grade. I actually use this grade level to introduce many familiar and unfamiliar companions to my students. One technique I tried out this year was The Super Star Series on YouTube by Omar Sulayman. Each day students watched one of his videos about a companion. The great thing about these videos are they have a theme character trait that he focuses on. So its easy to integrate it into Language Arts of Character Trait study. After the video we discussed it and asked them what was the theme. Once we finished discussing the amazing character of the companion I gave them a sticky note and they were asked to write down the one thing that stuck in their mind about that companion. I hung it on the bulletin board each day. This activity engaged them. They were excited to come in each day, move their chair closer to the projector, and watch a video. This was also preparing them for a project coming up soon...
For the 100th Day of School our school celebrates by having a huge contest. For the first hundred days of school the students memorize the 99 names of Allah. Then the week of the 100th Day of School they recite them and get trophies and prizes. I decided this year to create a bulletin board with the 99 names of Allah. I had this amazing rocket ship and thought of each student coloring an astronaut holding one of the names of Allah. It reads "Blasting Off With The 99 Names of Allah." The students loved it!
